“SoCalGas recognizes the impact this incident is having on the environment. I want to assure the public that we intend to mitigate environmental impacts from the actual natural gas released from the leak and will work with state officials to develop a framework that will help us achieve this goal.”
--SoCalGas CEO Dennis Arriola

Methane and the Environment

SoCalGas is a leader in the efforts to reduce emissions, and has historically had one of the lowest emissions rates in the country, despite being the nation’s largest natural gas distribution utility. As an environmentally-conscious company, we have taken great strides to reduce emissions, and have been a member of the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Natural Gas STAR program for over 20 years.

SoCalGas has committed to mitigating the greenhouse gas emissions of this incident even before the actual amount of the leaked volume has been determined. A comprehensive inventory of emissions will be taken after the leak has been stopped.

Air Samples & The Environment

The California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) has completed an assessment of six weeks of air samples taken from areas around the Aliso Canyon storage facility, and their results state that “available Porter Ranch neighborhood air sample data does not indicate that an acute toxicity health hazard exists in the Porter Ranch neighborhood as a result of the Aliso Canyon natural gas leak”.  For details from OEHHA, please click here.*

Our team of environmental specialists and retained experts will continue to conduct daily air sampling and monitoring at several representative sites both within the leak site and the community. Although experts agree that natural gas is not toxic and that the levels of the odorant in the natural gas are too low to be a long-term health concern, we will continue to conduct air sampling to provide the community with more information. The air samples we are taking are in addition to those being taken by South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD). Click here for our Air Sample Updates .*
